How do Variable Frequency Drives Save Energy?
A set of mechanical laws known as the pump and fan affinity laws govern the loading of centrifugal fans and pumps. These laws state that the power consumed will change by the change in speed cubed! This far exceeds any savings possible by closing valves!
Let's take a simple example: Suppose you have a pump, running across the line, at 60 Hz, drawing 100 KVA from the power line. Let's then suppose that we turn the speed down with a drive just 10%, or to 54 Hz.
Using what we know about the affinity laws, we'd take
.90 X .90 X .90 = .72 (90% speed cubed)
Our Power Consumed would now be 100 KVA X .72 = 72 KVA
In other words, a 10% change in speed resulted in a 28% reduction in power consumed! That's how Variable-Frequency Drives save energy!
In addition to saving energy, using drives often can save costs within many irrigation systems by reducing water wasted by over pressurization.
